Wonderland behind the mirror
——“Through the Looking-Glass”
杭州外国语学校裘宇飞 指导老师:胡跃波
I stared at the mirror on the desk as I closed the book. I tried to find something special, but I just saw the face of myself. I turned the mirror over; all I saw was only a blank plastic surface. “Looking-glass room? Large chessboard? Live backwards?” I whispered to myself, “It’s incredible — no, impossible! How could the author imagine such an odd world and wrote a story of it?”
“Anything can happen in my world of fairytales.”Said a gentle voice. “If you have a really childlike, pure heart, if you believe in fairytales, all these will happen.” “Who are you?” I wanted to say, but I couldn’t speak a single word — I was too surprised to see such a person — if he was a real human being, not a ghost or a memory or anything like that. “Lewis Carroll.” He smiled and said kindly, “I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my book.” Lewis Carroll? The author of this book? He passed away in 1898! Was I dreaming or … “Mr.…Mr. Carroll?” “Would you like to take a trip in the Looking-glass wonderland?” “O…OK, thank you very much.” I answered nervously. “Good. Here we go.” He took me by the hand, and touched the mirror with the other hand. In no time, we were in a strange room, with many chessmen in it. “Welcome to the Looking-glass room,” said Mr. Carroll pleasantly. “Now you can walk around, see the sights, and you can play chess if you like. But remember, you have to run fast to keep in the same place, and run twice as fast if you want to go somewhere different, and, life here go backwards. Well, I’ve got something to do — see you in a bit.” He said, and then disappeared. “Mr.…Mr. Carroll!” I shouted, “What shall I do? Self-guide? ” “Maybe, or you can play with us.” Said the White Queen,” You can be my Pawn. Let’s go to the Chess-board Country. You will start from the Second Square, and just go straightforward. You’ll be a Queen in the Eighth Square.” “A Queen!” I thought, “That’ll be great!” So I agreed, “OK. Let’s.”
Then we went to the country. I walked forward and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. I have never seen such wonderful countryside scenery before. In the Third Square, I got on a train. And met several strange people and animals — a gentleman in white paper, a Goat, a Beetle, and a horse. After that I walked through a wood. It’s quite funny that I forgot my own name in it, and didn’t remember it until I got out. Two chubby boys were standing right in front of me. “He… hello?” I tried to cover my nervousness. “Hello,” One of them spoke. “I’m Tweedledum.” “I’m Tweedledee.” Said the other one. I don’t want to stay too long with them, so I said “Very nice to meet you, good bye”, and left them. Then I saw the White Queen, but after I had a small talk with her, she disappeared — or maybe she turned into a sheep in an odd store! I walked out of the store, and saw a huge egg sitting on a wall. But it had eyes, nose and mouth, and he was snoring. “That must be Humpty Dumpty,” I said to myself, “I’d better not disturb him — or ‘it’. ” After a while, I was in another wood. I saw soldiers running through the woods. “There’s going to be a battle.” I thought, so I left the woods quickly. And I saw the White King; he took me to a city, to see a fight between a lion and a unicorn! After the “exciting” fight, the king and his messenger asked me to give out plum cake. It looked delicious, but I didn’t get even a little slice! I was not happy, so I decided to leave. I guessed I was in the Seventh Square, when a Red Knight stopped me and tried to catch me, but a White Knight came and beat him. The Red Knight left, and the White Knight came towards me. The knight told me, “You’ll be a Queen. And that’ll be the end of my move. Let’s go.” On our way he told me about his many inventions and ideas, and they were really — really not impractical. I had to say he had quite much imagination and he was an attractive person — I didn’t realize we had reached the end of the woods. He sang me a beautiful, but a little bluesy song. I looked at him — With his gentle smile, the sunlight shining on his armor, the horse quietly moving around, and the black shadows of the woods behind, suddenly I realized who he was. “Mr. Carroll!” I smiled and said, “You are here! Thank you very much for bringing me here!” But he just looked at me kindly, turned his horse round, and went back. I watched him for a while, and went on walking to the Eighth Square. I sat down on the soft green grass, and felt something heavy on my head. “A crown?” I tried to touch it, but everything disappeared. I was in my room, in front of my desk. My mom was stroking my head. “You fell asleep while reading,” she said, “and now it’s time for supper!” “I’ll come in a minute,” I said, and picked up the mirror again, looked at myself, smiling. “In this too realistic world, fairytales are too beautiful, too empty. People mistrust, people are cunning; many people have lost their imagination, purity and belief. They just struggle to live their lives. Their lives are monotonous, without colors or true happiness. They don’t believe in anything —fairytales, dreams, faith; But, they do not know, everything can happen,” I murmured to myself, “If you just believe.”
