The Call of the Wild is a very famous novelette written by Jack London, an American novelist who lived from 1876 to 1916. It is a story about Buck, a big dog.
At the beginning of the story, Buck lived a comfortable life in California, a south state of America. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. He was born there, and that was his place. At that time, he was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. But his good time ended soon. As men had found gold in the north, they needed big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snowy. Buck was stolen and sold to some persons from the north, thus began his cruel new life.
His new life was to pull sledges with other dogs, but that was not an easy job. There was no peace, no rest----only continual noise and movement. And every minute there was danger. Day after day Buck pulled in his harness, starting in the morning before it was bright and stopping in the evening after dark. He was always hungry, having not enough food to eat. He was always tired, because there were always many things to carry in a long distance. Even though, he was a hardworking dog and could finish his job successfully. He was the pride of his masters. It was from the new life that he learned the law of club and tooth, and became the lead-dog.
There were some precious days in the hard time. That was the days with John Thornton , a man who saved his life from the club. For the first time in his life, he got the love from a man, and for the first time, he learned to love, heartily. He loved John Thornton not only because he saved his life, but also because he was a very kind man who was naturally good to animals, took good care of his dogs just as they were his children, or his friends. Buck wanted to do everything for him. In fact, he saved the man’s life twice and once upon a time, he had made fourteen hundred dollars for Thornton and his friends in five minutes.
Although he was happy with Thornton, the call of the wild always attracted him. His dreams were filled with other animals—dogs, half wolves, and wild wolves. They seemed to call him into the forest, and sometimes Buck wanted to leave and answer the call. But every time he went into the trees, his love for Thornton brought him back.At the end of the story, Thornton was killed by Yeehats, the only tie with men did not exist any more. After taking his revenge, Buck went to the forest for ever.
I was deeply moved by the story. For me, it is not only a story of a dog; it is the story of us. The experience of Buck is just the experience of man. What is the meaning of “the call of the wild” to him? I think that it is the call of his nature and his heart. Although he was forced by whips, even tamed by love, the call of his heart is always there. Then, what are the calls of us? Can you hear it? Do you want to answer it?
