Project 1 Odd sequence

                  Project 1

                Odd sequence

Zara and Arun’s teacher wrote this on the board:

                                                       1, 4, 9, ...

                   What do you notice?

Talk to a partner about what you both noticed.

                                 They are square
                                    numbers.

To get from 1 to 4,
you add 3. To get from 4 to
                                                     9 you add 5. I wonder whether
you need to add 7 to get the
                                                              next number.

Do you agree with Zara’s observation? Do you agree with Arun’s?
                   Why or why not?

Continue the sequence to find the next three terms.

Will the number 63 be part of the sequence? How do you know?
Try to answer without continuing the sequence any further.

Why does adding consecutive odd numbers produce square

                   numbers?
You might like to explain in words, through pictures, or using both.
