                       Getting started

                       1 Put these numbers in order, from smallest to largest: 9, −7, 6, −5, 3, 0.
2 Find the multiples of 9 that are less than 50.
3 Find the factors of 15.
                       4 Work out 13 − 12 . Write your answer as a square number.
                                             2
                                        2

When you count objects, you use the positive whole numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, …

Whole numbers are the first numbers that humans invented.
You can use these numbers for more than counting.
For example, to measure temperature it is useful to have the number 0 (zero) and
                     negative whole numbers −1, −2, −3, …
You can put these numbers on a number line.

1, 2, 3, 4, … are sometimes called positive numbers to distinguish them from the
                     negative numbers −1, −2, −3, −4, …
Positive and negative whole numbers together with zero are called integers.

In this unit you will learn about integers and their properties.
