1.3 Animals in different habitats

                 Continued

Insects and other small animals need a safe

place to live close to food.

Many small animals eat twigs and dead leaves.

We can make a good habitat for insects in our

                 school grounds.

The insect hotel is made from sticks and stems.

Insects love to hide in sticks — they will eat the

                 sticks and lay eggs there.

Tie string around some stems and sticks.

Use more string to hang your insect hotel in a tree.

                 Now draw your insect hotel.

What sort of animals might come to live here?

What will they do in this new habitat?

If there are more insects, will this attract other animals?

Use books or pictures to find out about insects which might

                 live there.

Draw some insects you hope to attract.

                How am I doing?

Use modelling clay to make a small beetle or ant.

Put your model on a sheet of paper and draw the

                animal’s habitat.

Make sure it has all it needs.

Ask a friend to look at your habitat.

Do they think it is a good habitat for the insect?

                                                                                                           21
