Predict what will happen when you drip water onto your rocks.

Then wet them very slowly by dripping water from the spoon.

Do your rocks absorb water or are the rocks waterproof?

Record your results on a table like this.

                                                          Rock Slate

           Digging up rocks

We dig up rocks in quarries, in deep mines and from river beds.

We use tools, diggers, trucks and trains to dig and move the heavy

           rocks.

                                         Quarry

A quarry is a place where we dig rock at the

Earth’s surface. Sometimes we use explosives

to break rock into pieces. This is a dangerous

                                         job.

Rocks we get from a quarry are limestone,

                                         marble, slate and sandstone.

                                         Deep mine

A deep mine is a place where we dig up

rock deep underground. People use spades

and other tools. This is very dangerous work.

Rocks we get from mines are coal, marble, salt.
