The sixteen chapters offer different images of women, which present us a view of Chinese modernity that reflects the social and political realities in twentieth-century and enable the contemporary reader, especially the female reader, to envision a broader political struggle that lies beyond the horizon of gender disputes. The use of male narrative voice introduces irony into the representation of everyday life and encourages the reader to view male/female relationships in new ways.
